What Is An Enlarged Prostate?

Only men have prostate glands and they are situated beneath the bladder. This very small gland is roughly the same size as a large walnut and is comprised of two distinct lobes with a layer of tissue on the outside. Some would argue that the prostate should not be labeled as a gland, but an organ.
As males become older, the prostate gland often increases in size. During puberty it is a natural part of our growth phase for the prostate to double in size.
Once men reach the age of 25, or so, the prostate gland starts a subsequent stage of development. The gland continues to grow for many years and is the reason that it may become too enlarged, at some point. The problem is that the layer of tissue that protects the prostate does not grow at the same time. The effect can be the prostate pressing against the urethra like a clamp. As a result, the bladder walls start to become thicker and irritated. This is what is known as enlarged prostate, also known as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or BPH and leads to frequent urination.
The signs for BPH are obvious. A few of them are: having to urinate frequently, dribbling after urination, a burning sensation and discharge while urinating, trouble getting urine to flow, a thin stream of urine instead of a full stream and a feeling of fullness behind the scrotum and in front of the rectum.
If you have any, or several, of these signs or symptoms then you should go see a medical doctor. They will probably do tests on your urine, a rectal exam, blood analysis, ultrasound and make sure there are no signs of infection by checking for a discharge.
A conventional health professional is likely to prescribe antibiotics and medicines that work to shrink either the prostate and/or the bladder. A treatment plan’s main goal is to try and avoid urinary retention, which is the inability to urinate.
If you decide to try and treat BPH symptoms with natural remedies then you are one of many. All around the planet physicians are prescribing natural therapies to heal prostate gland problems. More often than not, conventional medicine only works to mask the signs and symptoms. Chasteberry and Black Cohosh may be used to attack the problem at it’s source. Chasteberry works to hold the hormones in balance and promote overall wellbeing. Siberian Ginseng is also an exceptional alternative for fighting off an enlarged prostate gland. Be sure to get your herbs from a reputable company and obtain the opinion of a homeopath in your locale.
